September 3, 2004 on this day: In 1838, at about age 20, Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery disguised as a sailor. Douglass soon settled in New York City where he became active in the anti-slavery movement. Douglass was a talented writer and public speaker, and he quickly became one of the most outspoken abolitionists in the United States. After the Civil War, Douglass remained a civil rights activist, calling for equality of women and minorities. In his later years he held a number of government posts, including two years as U.S. minister to Haiti. Douglass died at his home in New York in 1895. Premium Subscribers read more!
