Email Storage Race Fuels Web Hosting Fight

By Rawlson O'Neil King, theWHIR.com

September 8, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hosting providers are following
the lead of content

portals by offering massive amounts of storage to their consumers for both email and
their Web sites.

Hosting companies that typically offered a maximum of 500MB storage space for shared
hosting have begun

to offer in excess of 1GB of space.

In August, Hostway doubled the amount of disk space and email accounts on its entire
Web hosting

inventory. The free service upgrade was automatic and was designed to give all current
and future shared

hosting customers more powerful tools for creating multimedia Web sites.

"We've heard from customers time and again that a hassle free Web hosting experience
is paramount," said

John Lee, Hostway's vice president of marketing. "While many companies claim to truly
value their

customers, we felt it was important to substantiate our claim by listening to our
customers and solving a

specific need."

Hostway begun to offer its customers 1.2GB of disk space, unlimited traffic and 200
email addresses for

$27 per month.

GoDaddy also recently improved its email offerings by increasing storage space by up
to 500 percent while

providing additional mailboxes and mobile mail applications to users.

"We developed our email offering to provide the best possible solution for our
customers' growing needs,"

said Bob Parsons, president and founder of GoDaddy. "This most recent upgrade is a
reflection of our

customers requirement for a tremendously robust email system."

The new GoDaddy email offering provides five email addresses and 1GB of total storage
for $19.95 per

year. The service includes full virus and spam protection and Web mail with advanced
composition tools,

that allow users to send text and HTML emails, or to schedule email delivery for a
later date or time.

The Web-based accounts also provide a customizable tool bar and the ability to flag
email messages or use

a quick-view function.

GoDaddy also introduced a new shared hosting package with 1GB of Web server space
priced at $9.95 a

month. The package was introduced after Yahoo! put competitive pressure on the entire
Internet services

marketplace by offering expanded email and hosting storage at a discount.

Last month, the portal began selling an enhanced email package with 2GB of storage for
$19.95 per year.

The firm also began offering 2GB of server space and 2GB of email storage with its
$11.95 a month

"starter" hosting package.

The enlarged hosting service provides customers with up to 39 times disk space and
five times more

bandwidth to accommodate big multimedia sites. Yahoo! says it significantly upgraded
its email and Web

hosting services to enhance ease-of-use, storage and customer support, and to position
itself well within

a marketplace where the number of domains registered totals more than 50,000 per day.
The company plans

to leverage its brand recognition to make more headway within the hosting sector.

"Yahoo! is addressing the rapidly growing marketplace by offering a superior product
from a brand

customers can trust," said Rich Riley, a Yahoo! vice president and general manager.
"We continue to

innovate and deliver enhanced domain, email and web hosting products at competitive
prices to make it

easy for consumers and small businesses to stake their claim on the Internet."

The decision to increase Web hosting storage mimicked the company's choice to increase
its free email

storage limit to 100MB. Yahoo!, along with GoDaddy and Hostway, were motivated to
boost their respective

storage rates due to the "storage arms race" between Web mail providers that emerged
after Google

introduced its 1GB free email product, Gmail.

Gmail started the battle when it was launched in April. As a result, free email
providers, such as Lycos

and MSN have been forced either to match Gmail's 1GB allowance or drastically increase
the amount they

offer. Lycos is providing 1GB of mail storage for free while MSN's Hotmail will begin
offering 250MB

free, and 2GB of storage for $30 a year, starting this fall.

Some Web hosting companies are following in the vein of the free email providers by
offering massive

storage at cheap rates. 1&1 Internet now offers its entry 1GB shared hosting package
for only $4.99 per

month. With capacity increasing, and prices decreasing, Web hosting consumers can
expect more choice to

follow from the competitive pressure caused by the Web mail storage race.
