September 9, 2004 on this day:  

In 1945, at Harvard, computer engineers experienced the first 
known computer "bug" while working on a Mark II Aiken Relay 
Calculator.  This computer glitch was caused by an actual insect, 
a moth, that had become trapped between two relay switches.  
Although this incident provided the basis for describing computer 
problems as "bugs," the use of the word to describe electronic 
malfunctions was used as early as the 1890s.  The moth that was 
removed from the machine was preserved, and today it resides 
in the History of American Technology museum, which is part
