Howe was an amateur machinist who had worked in textile mills as
a young man. The machine that he invented worked well, but Howe

manufacturers began to successfully sell machines based on Howe's
design. This prompted Howe to initiate a series of lawsuits. One
of these manufacturers was Isaac Singer. Howe eventually won in
court and became wealthy from the royalties he received from
sewing machine sales.
