Attorney General Charlie Crist said Wednesday 6,478 complaints about price gouging during Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan have been filed. Among those complaints, 578 were made in Lee County and 135 were made in Collier County. RESIDENTS WARNED: BEWARE SCAMMERS IN STORMS WAKE In the wake of Hurricane Charley and Hurricane Frances, many from south Lee County and Bonita Springs opened their hearts to those affected by the storm. They donated time, supplies and money to help out those in need. People want to help and they have. They have been very generous, said Randye Carter, public information officer for the American Red Cross. Its human nature. Unfortunately, there will also be people who will commit fraud. AFTER CHARLEY AND FRANCES, RESIDENTS TAKE THREAT OF IVAN SERIOUSLY The two warning shots helped. When Hurricane Ivan followed his siblings Charley and Frances by threatening to batter Florida, residents of Lee and Collier counties were already fluent in safety procedures, emergency management officials said Wednesday. Ive never seen so many businesses or houses that had plywood and shutters on, and they left them on. It shows that people were concerned and wanted to protect their property, said Terry Kelley, Lee emergency management coordinator. Sometimes it takes a wake-up call. FORMER DEVELOPER JAILED AFTER FAILING TO REPAY SCAM VICTIMS A former real estate developer who pleaded no contest two years ago to stealing $1.5 million in escrow funds from residential buyers is back in jail, held on no bond after authorities said he failed to make full restitution to his victims. In an emergency hearing called by defense attorneys Wednesday, Collier County Circuit Judge Lawrence D. Martin refused to set bond for Eli Baron, 52, who is serving a five-year probation term. He was convicted in June 2002 of first-degree grand theft. Get details on all these stories and more at http://www.naplesnews.com IN PERSPECTIVE: GREG DOBBS: DUBIOUS DEBATE VS. What Kerrys comes down to is a dispute between him and the vets who support his account of heroism under enemy fire, and those who dont. You might ascribe it to the fog of war. Two people were killed and others were trapped in rubble from their damaged homes as three tornadoes roared through the Panama City area, authorities said. John Kerrys Vietnam War record and old questions about President Bushs National Guard service get more attention than present-day issues like the Iraq war, the economy, intelligence reform or the assault weapons ban.
