Oracle vs. PeopleSoft: When Bad Things Happen to Good
Companies

I've always been amazed at how corporate big-wigs talk about
the wonders of competition as it were some sort of addictive
drug, while at the same time doing everything they can to
put everyone else out of business. That's sad because
companies do a better job with competitors breathing down
their neck and slack off when the competition goes away.

In this vein, it is my fervent hope that PeopleSoft will
fight off Larry Ellison's unwanted advances and remain an
independent company. I also hope PeopleSoft's legal actions
will prevail and make a big dent in Larry's wallet, since I
think the real goal isn't so much to buy PeopleSoft as to
cripple it.

While I think Oracle is willing to buy PeopleSoft just to
kill its product line, Larry would rather just create enough
FUD that PeopleSoft emerges critically injured. This would
cost Oracle much less than a buyout and would give Larry a
chance to play catch-up.

I was saddened--if not surprised--to see the Justice
Department lose its attempt to block the takeover. But there
is still a long legal road ahead, unless PeopleSoft decides
to give up and accept what could be a pretty terrible fate.

PeopleSoft is a classy company and Oracle would benefit more
by emulating rather than consuming it.

Do's and Don'ts of Forensic Computer Investigations

I've recently been taking a computer forensics course. I
won't comment on the sad state of affairs that makes me
interested in the topic, but it's really fascinating.

I knew that forensic techniques would be different from
day-to-day PC maintenance, but I didn't realize how easily a
well-meaning but ill-informed IT person could ruin an
investigation by doing something as seemingly unimportant as
turning a machine off or on.

This came up during a conversation with John Colbert,
president and CEO of Guidance Software, the publisher of
Entrust and other forensic tools. He was kind enough to
prepare a quick-and-dirty guide for IT staffs who find
themselves needing to examine a machine for evidence.

I learned a great deal from our conversation, and my hope is
this series of two columns will keep IT staffers with no
investigative experience out of trouble and perhaps inspire
some to further study in this fascinating area of computer
science.

$50 Package Relieves (Some) Outlook Pain

Having recently written about missing features in Microsoft
Outlook and briefly touching on third-party add-ins, I was
quite interested in You Software's Perform, a new collection
of 15 add-ins that address some of the issues I mentioned
and a few I didn't. For $50 this can be a very good deal.

How to Make WordPerfect More Competitive

Responding to my recent column on how to live without
Microsoft Office, my friend Tom King sent a plan for making
WordPerfect more competitive. The plan includes work by
Novell, Plaxo, Best Software and Broderbund, but it isn't so
far-fetched. I made some changes in Tom's plan and turned it
into a column-length suggestion for making the world a more
competitive place.

Tom, by the way, is a smart marketing staff guy who is
looking for someplace interesting to work. If you know of
any such jobs, drop me a line and I will send you his
resume.
