Calling the past few years "awful, embarrassing and scandalous," Gerald F. Kicanas, 
bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, added to a painful period in the local 
church's history yesterday by filing for federal bankruptcy protection.

Bush, Kerry OK debates 
DERRY, N.H. - Negotiators for President Bush and Democrat John Kerry agreed yesterday 
to three 90-minute debates beginning Sept. 30, including one town-hall format with 
questions from undecided voters. The third debate will be held Oct. 13 at Arizona 
State University in Tempe.

Scores show some progress 
More Pima County third-, fifth- and eighth-graders made one year of academic growth in 
reading and math than the state average, according to an analysis of standardized test 
scores released Monday afternoon.

After further review, Mike Stoops wants further review. The Arizona football coach 
confirmed yesterday that he has submitted video clips of questionable calls and 
no-calls from Saturday's 9-7 loss to Wisconsin to the Pac-10 office.

Deal may salvage jobs 
Laid-off Bombardier Aerospace workers may get another chance to stay in Tucson after 
all. Negotiations between the Tucson Airport Authority and Bombardier over a possible
