Reference Guide
Your Host Bill Ball

The last 30 days have been a challenge. Since an early August relocation to the central gulf region of Florida, Ive gone through four hurricanes: Alex, Charley, and Frances, plus one near miss with hurricane Ivan. There have been bad driving conditions, ordered evacuations, gas shortages, loss of phone service, and no power for days at a time.
Fortunately a dialup connection (when the phone lines were up) allowed tracking the hurricanes via the Web. I also found out that Linux is being used by a number of weather-related emergency and forecasting agencies. One is Environment Canadas Hurricane Centre. You can read David Grahams story on NewsForge here.
Last year in the U.S. the National Weather Service switched over to Linux workstations. To learn more, read the LinuxPlanet story.
If you want track hurricanes on your Linux system, try Jim Grahams jstrack client, written in Tcl/Tk. Screenshots are here.
Ill post more links to weather-related Linux software in the future, but for now, please think about those poor folks in the Gulf states.
