LOCAL HAITIANS WORRY ABOUT FAMILY BACK IN ISLAND NATION
They don't know if their families are alive. Since Tropical Storm Jeanne hit the
already-battered Caribbean nation, Haitians living in Southwest Florida are trying
desperately to contact family and friends in and around Gonaives, a city in Haiti
that's become too familiar with destruction this year. There have already been reports
of more than 600 people dead from the dangerous waters that have immersed homes and
cars, and locals wonder if that number includes their own relatives.

GOSS ONLY A VOTE AWAY FROM BECOMING NEXT CIA DIRECTOR
WASHINGTON Rep. Porter Goss is a vote away from becoming the next director of
Central Intelligence, and even his harshest critics believe the U.S. Senate will
confirm him for the post today. Three Democrats and nine Republicans on the Senate
intelligence committee charged with approving the candidate voted to send Goss'
nomination to the full chamber during a closed session on Tuesday.

STUDY: ROAD IMPROVEMENTS MAY CUT EVACUATION TIMES
A $15,000 road study commissioned by Florida Gulf Coast University recommends road
improvements in south Lee County that may reduce evacuation times and provide more
effective routes when hurricanes threaten the area. The study, written by a team from
consulting firm Carter & Burgess Inc., examines the area's road evacuation plan in an
area where only two roads, U.S. 41 and Interstate 75, provide major exits for a
concentrated population.

WILDLIFE GROUP WANTS LEE TO UPDATE GROWTH PLAN
Lee County is not doing enough to protect the highly endangered Florida panther and
should change its growth management plan or face a possible building moratorium, a
statewide environmental group said this week in a letter to state officials. The
Florida Wildlife Federation is asking the Department of Community Affairs, or DCA, to
send Lee's updated comprehensive plan back to the county until further panther
protections are adopted.

PERSPECTIVE:

EDITORIAL: PRICE GOUGING -- STORMING AFTER SUSPECTS
Florida's top cops announced after Hurricane Charley they would invite citizen
complaints of price-gouging, then investigate and file charges where appropriate. Lo
and behold, the promise by the attorney general's office was for real more than a
feel-good gesture. State government has gotten nearly 6,500 complaints, with about 700
of them from Southwest Florida. Charlie Crist's office has actually listened,
investigated and filed charges.

COUNTY GIVES WATERSIDE SHOPS FINAL OK FOR EXPANSION
Tiffany & Co. is only a small indication of change, but in the next few years, the
Waterside Shops will undergo a major facelift. Tuesday the Collier County Commission
gave final approval to the mall's request to expand. The additional space will allow
Saks Fifth Avenue to add a second story and make room for two parking structures.

TRACKING DOWN ETHNIC GROCERIES AND EXOTIC INGREDIENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Today it's easier than ever to transport your taste buds to foreign lands by visiting
a local supermarket. Ethnic food sections have expanded considerably in recent years.
But in many cases, even the most well-stocked Publix or Winn-Dixie still won't yield
every item needed to make a favorite dish. Mostly, you'll find staples like grains,
legumes, spices, fruits, canned and bottles sauces. Near East, Goya and Athenos are a
few of the familiar brands.
