Man, I hate Mondays. Spent the better part of the day spin-kicking
a case fan that would not stop making so much noise. Oh sure, I could
have been professional about it and actually tried to troubleshoot the
problem, but what fun would that be? On a brighter note, however, I
received some great feedback regarding my questions and concerns about
moving to Vonage. While I am still a little leery about it, I might...

Welcome to Just Ask Matt! - The IT industry's answer to the help
column, only slightly more medicated. Today, Tim writes: Matt, how
come some computers have heatsinks with fans attached and others
don't? My computer is older and I am guessing this has something to do
with why there is no fan. What is going on here?... [Continued]

There is nothing quite as irritating as waking up from a restful
slumber only to find your browser stuck at the infamous "resolving or
connecting (insert homepage here)" mode with your cable connection.
You know the one, where it just hangs there for no reason at all when
you know that no changes to the Internet connection have taken place.
It is irritating and often seems to happen without any real reason
whatsoever. Never fear,... [Continued]

"So this is my first ever blog entry and seeing as how I'm a
senior member of the PSS Security Incident Response team, you may
think I've stopped taking my medication by opening with a title like
the one above! Medication issues notwithstanding, it's true - you
should NOT be using passwords of any kind. Why? For starters,
passwords are ridiculously easy to guess or crack. Worms like Agobot /
Phatbot / Polybot / SDBot... [Continued]

In response to Matt Hartley's report, From Phone Age To Vonage?,
Gnomie Jim Bell writes: Matt, I subscribed to Vonage's Voice over IP
service about two weeks ago. First, the good stuff. The call
accounting platform is excellent. Being able to pick up voice mail
from Vonage's Web site or in your e-mail box is a great feature.
Quality of Service is excellent. I also love the ability to have both
my home phone and... [Continued]

I have been using SourceSafe (6.0D) over a 1.6 MB DSL line for
several months with great success. Recently, I brought on two more
developers for my project, and both of them had just horrific results.

As a tech, I found out something interesting with the SP2. A
computer store locally is an OEM distributor and I even work through
them to put on OSes for people. He gave me a copy of "Gold" addition
of SP2 so I can upgrade customers' XP machines. For those of you who
don't know it, the "Gold" version is the full-blown 255 MB version of
SP2 that Microsoft provides to licensed distributors, computer
