NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORK WORLD FUSION

By Jeff Caruso

There's a lot of money in tobacco - at least, there was, until
lawsuit settlements called for tens of billions of dollars to be
distributed from tobacco companies to state governments. What
the states do with the cash is up to them, but the State of
Virginia has decided to pour it into networking, and lay a
thousand miles of fiber-optic lines.

Fiorina: Sometimes IT spending is a 'bad thing'

HP's Carly Fiorina says that this year's fourth quarter is
unlikely to show enterprise companies splurging on IT gear. As
she correctly points out, for each of the last three years
industry pundits have been saying that the fourth quarter would
be the one where IT spending would go through the roof. Fiorina
argues that the old models of IT spending are "bad," and new,
"good" spending doesn't involve splurging.

IBM, other vendors accused of cheating E-Rate program

U.S. House members Wednesday accused IBM and other IT vendors of
breaking the rules in a much-criticized program designed to help
schools and libraries purchase Internet equipment.

New, dangerous Microsoft JPEG exploit released

New computer code that exploits a recently disclosed hole in
Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser is circulating on the
Internet and could allow remote attackers to take full control
of vulnerable Windows machines, according to warnings from
anti-virus companies and Internet security experts.
