1. Who Is Hurt By Microsoft's Neglect of Older Browsers?

Microsoft this week appears to have reneged on what some
understood as a promise to port the SP2 security fixes to IE
running on pre-XP operating systems, including Win98, NT,
and W2K. I won't get into whether or not a promise was
actually made, but I wrote a column about the impact of not
bringing security fixes to these nearly ancient, but still
widely used, operating systems. What does it mean to orphan
millions of machines from security fixes? Can't be good.

2. If Industry Can't Get Anti-Spam Right, Let The Government
Try

Also in the news since last we met was the decision by the
Internet Engineering Task Force to kill an anti-spam
workgroup. My thought is that if the Internet industry can't
stop squabbling and start solving the spam problem, perhaps
it should have some "friendly" competition from the United
States government.

3. Which Do We Need More: VOIP or Wiretaps?

This week I came out in support of an FCC proposal to insure
that VOIP will be able to be wiretapped by law enforcement
when required, just like wired and wireless telephony are
today. Why give criminals and terrorist a safe haven for
illicit communications?

4. Read These Columns Before Your Next Investigation

I don't usually refer to older columns in the weekly
newsletter, but my two recent pieces on forensics are pretty
interesting, if I do say so myself. The first offered
guidelines for conducting a search for evidence on someone's
computer. The second column offered a step-by-step guide
for how IT staff can avoiding messing things up-which is
easier than getting them right. If you may ever be asked to
investigate someone's computer, please read these columns.
Then go get some forensics training.

5. Spammer Bounties: Good Idea or Not?

In the blog this week I picked a fight with Larry Seltzer
over whether the FTC's suggestion that bounties might be
offered for spammers is (me) or is not (Larry) a good idea.

6. Are We Ready for Gbrowser?

Next week, I am tentatively planning to write a follow-up on
rumors that Google wants to get into the browser business.
There is so much to think about here that I'll spend part of
the weekend calling industry friends to get some perspective
before commenting. But my first thought was that it's an
attempt by Google to be more than a wannabe in the great
scheme of things. As it exists today, Google is more a media
company than a technology business, something doing its own
browser could hope to change.

On tap for next week are some choice words on the new C3Expo
conference scheduled for next June in New York. Stay tuned.

Have a great weekend.
