 Welcome

Last week, we featured Brian Kinchen of the New England Patriots, whose football snap contributed to a Superbowl storybook ending. This week, another Superbowl participant is featured—but one who experienced the other side of this ending. In our Spotlight article, kicker John Kasay of the Carolina Panthers discusses his disappointing kick, his realization that God's purposes for his life may be very different from his own, and his distinction between "who you are" as a person and "what you do."

Our Christian Athlete Profile features yet another NFL player in Kurt Warner. This New York Giants quarterback has been making something of a comeback, but his attitude and focus remain constant despite his struggles or successes. Read his comments on the topic below.

Injuries are an unfortunate, yet all-too-familiar component of sports competition. Go to this week's poll to let us know which injured NFL player is hurting his team the most.

Whichever side of the storybook ending you feel you're on this week, remember God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours—and he works everything out for our good.

Until next time,
Jill

On Surviving a Bad Kick

When the Super Bowl was over and the confetti started pouring down, I stood near the 30 and looked for my good friend and former Panther, Ken Walter, who had just held on Adam Vinatieri's game-winning field goal. The Patriots had released him the first week of December, then brought him back. It was special for me that he could be a part of that. I wanted to see him, but we got cordoned off.

When the clock went to zero, my feeling was, "I want to keep fighting." I wanted an opportunity to maybe kick a long field goal. I wished that my kickoff hadn't gone out of bounds, giving them the ball at the 40 on their final drive. It's not what I wanted. It's not what I expected. It's not what I thought would happen in a million years. I'm disappointed because it really put us in a very bad position.

But I think people have made a much bigger deal out of it than I have personally. There are disappointments that have happened all through my life. It's another situation.

It's like, 'Lord, you give me good things, and you give me things I don't understand.' Really, it's about glorifying God and not about what I want or demand. It's not about meeting my expectations.
