THE FOUNDATION

"I think we have more machinery of government than is
necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the
industrious." --Thomas Jefferson

______----********O********----______
INSIGHT

"We do not admire a man of timid peace." --Theodore Roosevelt
"The enjoyment of power inevitably corrupts the judgment of reason,
and perverts its liberty." --Immanuel Kant
"Political scientists almost everywhere have promoted the expansion
of government power. They have functioned as the clergy of
oppression." --Rudolph Rummel
"Night brings our troubles to the light, rather than banishes
them." --Seneca
"Courage is resistance to fear, master of fear -- not absence
of fear. Except a creature be part coward, it is not a compliment
to say it is brave." --Mark Twain
"The Jews and Arabs should settle their dispute in the true spirit
of Christian charity." --Alexander Wiley

______----********O********----______
UPRIGHT

"Senator Kerry talked of reducing terrorism to -- quote -- nuisance
-- end quote; and compared it to prostitution and illegal gambling.
I couldn't disagree more. Our goal is not to reduce terror to
some acceptable level of nuisance. Our goal is to defeat terror
by staying on the offensive, destroying terrorists and spreading
freedom and liberty around the world." --President George W. Bush
"When pro-Kerry commentators solemnly pronounce Debate Round
2 to have been 'a draw' -- you know George Bush won that
round."--William Safire
"Congratulations to the people of Afghanistan, who have just
held the first free election in their history. As in Australia,
the Afghan election was a defeat for al-Qa'ida -- in this case
simply by virtue of taking place." --James Taranto
"Whether you're talking about an assembly line worker or the
chairman of the board, attendance records like Senators Edwards'
and Kerry's would get anyone else fired. ... Based on their
records, neither John Kerry nor John Edwards deserves a job
promotion." --Linda Chavez
"[I]s it too much to hope that campaign trail accusations bear
some resemblance to the facts?" --Paul Jacob
"I have been involved in the war on terrorism for two decades,
and in my view no world leader has better understood the stakes in
this global war than President Bush. Mr. Kerry is free to quote
my comments about Iraq. But for the sake of honesty he should
also point out that I have repeatedly said, including in all
my speeches in recent weeks, that President Bush made a correct
and courageous decision to liberate Iraq from Saddam Hussein's
brutality, and that the president is correct to see the war in
Iraq as a central front in the war on terrorism." --Paul Bremer

______----********O********----______
EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"A genuine democratic election in war-torn and historically
undemocratic Afghanistan is monumental by any account. Early
reports indicated some irregularities, but by yesterday morning,
monitors from the United Nations and the Organization for Security
and Cooperation in Europe were defending the overall integrity of
the election. Taliban insurgents promised attacks to disrupt the
voting but were either thwarted by Coalition and Afghan security
forces or had already been rendered incapable of doing much harm.
Where once democracy was a distant idea, now it is a reality.
The results won't be in for two to three weeks -- the ballots
haven't even begun to be counted -- but in a country where
electricity is scarce and ballot boxes travel by donkey, that's
to be expected. President Bush said it all this weekend when he
pointed out that in Afghanistan, 'Just three years ago, women were
being executed in the sports stadium. Today they're voting for
a leader of a free country.' Credit goes first to the voters of
Afghanistan who braved the Taliban's repeated threats not to vote.
Where before Afghans were subjects, now they are an electorate.
Credit should also go to Afghan electoral officials and security
forces, who administered an election for the first time and
kept order despite continued lawlessness in much of the country.
Credit also goes to the Coalition forces who routed the Taliban
regime, and now guard a fragile and emerging democracy where
an abusive theocracy once stood. And of course credit goes to
Mr. Bush, whose determination in the weeks after the September 11th
attacks to remove the Taliban made Afghan democracy a possibility
in the first place." --The Washington Times

DEZINFORMATSIA

This week's "Circling the Wagons" Award: "[W]hatever people say
about Dan [Rather], some of which seems to me to be unnecessarily
cruel and ugly, in 40 years the evening news has never been
driven by ideology. And boy, do I recognize ideology when I
see it." --Peter Jennings ++ "I indeed am humbled by this,
and by what it represents to CBS News, and to me, personally.
Please know, too, that we are resolved to emerge from this trial
as an even stronger news organization, so that we may continue to
be worthy of your trust and confidence." --Dan Rather, accepting
the "Overall Excellence Award" on behalf of CBS News from the
Radio-Television News Directors Association
>From the "See BS" Files: "[N]early 60 percent of the uncommitted
voters we surveyed said they did not personally like [Dick Cheney].
When asked how they'd feel if Cheney became President, 24 percent
said 'scared'." --CBS's Anthony Mason **Why was "scared" an option
to begin with?
"To say that I consider Bush a 'bad' president would be a severe
understatement. I think he's bad in a way that redefines my
understanding of the word 'bad.' I used to think U.S. history had
many bad presidents. Now, my 'bad' category consists entirely
of George W. Bush, with every previous president redefined as
'good'." --Jonathan Chait of the L.A. Times
>From the "Queen Maureen" Files: "Of his decision to invade Iraq,
[Bush] said: 'Sometimes in this world you make unpopular decisions
because you think they're right.' Or you stick to them even
after you know they're wrong." --Maureen Dowd **Tell the liberated
Iraqis it was wrong to liberate them.
>From the Leftmedia Cheerleading Files: "Whether you agree with
him or disagree with him, you now know where John Kerry stands on
what has happened in Iraq." --CBS's Bob Schieffer **Correction:
we know John Kerry's stands.
This week's "Leftmedia Psychosis" Award: "The administration has
also helped Israel to demonize and isolate Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat." --Helen Thomas **Arafat needs no help from anyone
to be recognized as a demon; he can successfully self-advertise.

______----********O********----______
THE DEMO-GOGUES

This week's "Non Compos Mentis" Award: "If kids and adults don't
have access to preventative care, if they're not getting the health
care that they need day after day after day, the possibility of
not only developing AIDS and...other life-threatening diseases,
is there every day of their lives." --John Edwards claiming that
lack of health care, not irresponsible sexual behavior, causes AIDS
This week's "Leftpinkie" Award: "We have to get back to the place
we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but
they're a nuisance. ... I mean, [September 11th] didn't change
me much at all." --John Kerry, in an interview with The New York
Times Magazine **Wow! That inspires confidence!
>From "The Plan" Files: "The president continues to think he is
running against some imaginary figure that his ad-makers created.
It's time to come back to reality. He's running against John
Kerry, who has a plan to get the country back on track." --Kerry
campaign spokesman Phil Singer **Ah, yes, "the plan."
This week's "Blow Hard" Award: "John Kerry stands for a safer,
stronger, and fairer nation for all our people. The last thing
America needs is four more years of the same failed course we're
careening down today." --Ted Kennedy
This week's "Ultimate Demagoguery" Award: "Christopher Reeve
just passed away, and America just lost a great champion for
this cause, somebody who was a powerful voice for the need to
do stem cell research and change the lives of people like him,
who have gone through a tragedy. Well, if we do the work that we
can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry
is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to walk,
get up out of that wheelchair and walk again." --John Edwards
**It sure didn't take long to politicize Reeve's death!

______----********O********----______
VILLAGE IDIOTS

This week's "Theophobic" Award: "Some politicians and Religious
Right activists are eager to transform houses of worship
into political machines. ... It is not the job of religious
leaders to tell people which candidates to vote for or not vote
for." --Americans United for Separation of Church and State ++
This week's "TheoLib" Award: "For every Goliath, God has a David.
For every Calvary's cross, God has a Christ Jesus. To bring our
country out of despair, discouragement, despondency and disgust,
God has a John Kerry." --Pastor Gaston Smith, stumping for Kerry at
the pulpit **Where's Americans for Separation of Church and State?
Oh, that's right. It's only wrong for the "Religious Right"...
>From the files of the Morally Depraved: "We live in a world where
all the violence is inspired by religion. When I was a kid, I
had to go to a Christian school. I thought God was about peace
and love, so now it seems strange that being labeled the devil
is a bad thing. The devil is often the more human character,
the one you can relate to. After all, he was cast out of heaven
for wanting to be an individual." --Marilyn Manson
More from the files of the Morally Depraved: "[I]t is increasingly
clear that the administration and right-wing members of Congress
intend to funnel the bulk of the new HIV/AIDS money to religious
organizations that have a very narrow, abstinence-based approach
to HIV/AIDS prevention that excludes condoms." --Planned Parenthood
**How dare they fund programs that work!
This week's "Consummate Village Celeb" Award: "We don't feel at
home unless we hear some boos, so you're welcome." --Dixie Chicks
lead singer Natalie Maines responding to boos from the crowd
This week's "Conspiracy Theory" Award: "Do not be naive. AIDS is
not a curse from God to Africans or the black people. It is
a tool to control them designed by some evil-minded scientists,
but we may not know who particularly did [it]." --Wangari Maathai,
latest Noble Peace Prize recipient **Since Saddam Hussein is in
prison, he was not eligible to receive the prize.

______----********O********----______
SHORT CUTS

"With a straight face [Senator Kerry] said, 'I have only had one
position on Iraq.' I could barely contain myself. He must think
we've been on another planet." --President George W. Bush
"Democrats are now on the record: 60 countries harbor al-Qa'ida.
But apparently the one nation that had managed to entirely purge
itself of all al-Qa'ida members was Iraq -- under the great
statesman Saddam Hussein! Iraq is the only country in the world
liberals believe was hermetically sealed from al-Qa'ida." --Ann
Coulter
"Give [John Kerry] a wand and slap a pair of wings on his back:
[he] is running for fairy godmother! Our allies are opposed to
the war? A swoosh of the Kerry wand and President Kerry will
have the French and Germans rushing to our rescue in no time.
Iraq needs a new army to defend itself? Zap bing -- the Kerry
touch will make training an Iraqi army faster and easier.
Al-Qa'ida and other terrorists are pouring over the border to
join the fight? When Kerry is elected, the guerrilla insurgency
will magically disappear. A summit? How brilliant! Why didn't
President Bush think of that?" --Maggie Gallagher
"The Columbus Day Parade was held [Monday] in New York. [Columbus]
was the world's first Democrat. He left not knowing where he was
going, arrived not knowing where he was, went home not knowing
where he had been, and he did it all on government money." --Argus
Hamilton

NIGHTLINES

David Letterman.... "Top Questions Audience Members Were Not
Allowed To Ask During Friday's Debate:" Who's a better one-term
president -- you or your father?; Is it annoying being married to
a woman who always smells like ketchup?; With oil at $50 a barrel,
why aren't we looking into cheaper barrels?' Which best describes
your economic policies: "Preposterous lies" or "Absolute crap"?;
Senator Kerry, what impact do you think your large, canoe-shaped
head will have on the economy?; What is your favorite episode of
"Sanford and Son"?; Do you prefer flipping or flopping?; Which one
of you is Dukakis?; Do you think John Edwards would be interested
in dating a New Jersey Governor?; If either of you win, will you
pardon Martha?

Jay Leno.... Friday was the second presidential debate, which
was a town hall format. That's where everyday Americans,
not just reporters, get a chance to have their questions
avoided. .... To relax President Bush spent the day fishing in
the rain. Am I missing something -- are they afraid he was
a little too prepared for the last debate? .... [Friday's]
debate in St. Louis was before an audience made up entirely
of undecided voters. That created a huge dilemma for Kerry.
...[S]tand on stage beside Bush or sit in the audience with all
the other people who can't make up their minds? .... How stupid is
this -- a Minneapolis company has come out with a credit card size
shotgun that fits in your wallet. The inventor says he invented
it to give people a sense of security. Oh yeah, what makes you
feel more secure than sitting on shotgun? .... Elementary school
students in Berkeley are receiving a class credit for "lunch".
Since they learn about nutrition, lunch is now considered a class.
See, that's when you know we're getting too fat in this country,
when students are actually majoring in lunch! .... What if you
flunked lunch? How embarrassing would that be? .... Do you
realize there are now only three weeks left till the start of
the 2008 presidential campaign? It's hard to believe.
