October 14, 2004 on this day: 

In 1066 William Duke of Normandy defeated the Anglo-Saxons at the 
Battle of Hastings.  William landed his army on the English coast 
near Hastings and in a day-long battle defeated the forces of 
Anglo-Saxon King Harold.  This victory sealed the conquest of 
England by William.  He kept a sixth of the land for himself and 
divided the rest among his Norman nobles.  The conquest meant the 
replacement of the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy with a Norman one.  
However, the Anglo-Saxons and Normans would fuse into a single 
people: the English.
