ELECTION 2004: CHENEY ATTACKS KERRY DURING FGCU SPEECH
Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday attacked U.S. Sen. John Kerry for espousing
what he called unrealistic policies and mentioning his daughter Mary Cheney's sexual
orientation in the final presidential debate. In a speech at Florida Gulf Coast
University that lasted about 20 minutes, Cheney spent most of his time criticizing
Kerry's plans and warned the hundreds of local Republicans gathered in Alico Arena
that the senator's domestic proposals would lead to higher taxes.

2 LOCAL PROJECTS AMONG THOSE ANNOUNCED BY GOVERNOR
Two Southwest Florida water projects are part of a plan unveiled Thursday to try to
speed Everglades restoration. Gov. Jeb Bush announced the plan, dubbed Acceler8, at a
Palm Beach County wildlife refuge on the edge of the Everglades. Under the plan, a
significant break from a 2000 federal-state agreement on Everglades restoration,
Florida would take a lead role by pumping $1.5 billion into eight projects to be built
by 2011 across South Florida, in some cases 10 years ahead of schedule.

PARK SERVICE RESCINDS CONTRACT WITH VA. COMPANY
WASHINGTON The National Park Service has rescinded its contract with a Virginia
company expected to run tour-boat operations at Everglades National Park, allowing
Everglades City Mayor Sammy Hamilton to stay on in the role he has held for the past
45 years. Hamilton's Everglades Boat Tours Inc. remains under contract for the
remainder of 2004. Agency spokesman Paul Winegar said the short time to select a
company to run boat tours next year means keeping Hamilton on for 2005 and is
"probably the most logical" option.

PRINCIPAL CHARGED IN ACCIDENT RETURNS TO WORK
Immokalee Middle School Principal Lisa Scallan returned to work on Thursday, her first
day back since police arrested her last week. They charged her with leaving the scene
after hitting a bicyclist with her car. Until her trial, the new principal will remain
on "conditional employment" with the Collier County School District. Scallan, 39,
referred calls to her attorney, Shannon McFee, who said she'll plead not guilty during
a Nov. 2 court date.

PATIENTS' RIGHTS
Eight Florida Constitution amendments are up for voters' review in the general

BUSINESS:

FIRST NATIONAL PROFIT UP IN 3RD QUARTER
First National Bankshares of Florida Inc.'s commercial lending business helped boost
profits this quarter, but its active acquisition strategy kept earnings per share
flat. Thursday, the Naples-based financial holding company reported third-quarter
profits of $8.9 million, or 17 cents per diluted share. That compares to $8.3 million,
or 17 cents per share, during the same period last year.

NEAPOLITAN:

VISUAL JOURNALISM, ENGRAVED IN WOOD
While we await further marvels from the tiny microchip, it is important to realize
that innovative mental prowess powers mankind. That was also true well over a century
ago when American artist Winslow Homer drew journalistic scenes. He sketched directly
on large hardwood blocks, then turned them over to engravers and printers producing
Harper's Weekly, the "Journal of Civilization," as it proclaimed itself to readers.
