THIS WEEK IN THE HSI FORUM

All I could do was shake my head.

Earlier this month, I came across a Reuters Health headline that
read: "Women going back on hormone therapy US study."

Incredible, isn't it? It seems that in spite of all the recent evidence
that the use of synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
sharply increases heart disease and breast cancer risk, about one in
four women who stopped using HRT have begun using it again.

On the heels of damaging studies, proponents of synthetic HRT
have been recommending the smallest dose for the shortest
possible time in order to avoid the deadly serious side effects. So I
suppose this has reassured some women that there's safety in low
dosage over a short term. Or maybe one in four women simply
haven't heard that there are natural methods for addressing
menopausal symptoms.

Women who are looking for a way to manage hot flashes and other
symptoms of menopause could start by reading an HSI Forum
thread titled "Maca Root." An HSI member named Suzanne begins
the thread with this question: "Has anyone tried Maca Root before?
I am interested because it says it jogs the pituitary and
hypothalamus and balances hormones in the body. Anyone have
experience with this?"

Natural agents (such as yam cream and black cohosh) that help
control some menopausal problems simply don't work for
everyone. And this comment about maca root from a member
named Jo makes that clear: "I used it for a short time when I was
having hormonal hot flushes. It didn't help."

But a member named Inni had a much different experience: "I tried
maca for hot flashes (I had two or three each hour! and woke up at
night countless times soaked (w/sweat) and hot), and I felt it
working after about a week or so when it went down to maybe two
or three hot flashes a day a major improvement to the amount I
had before! For the hot flashes completely to disappear it took
about 4 weeks.

"There was a time when I just plain forgot to take Maca because I
had no more hot flashes (and humans tend to forget what doesn't
bother them, including the remedy), and the hot flashes started to
come back. So I started taking maca again, and bye bye hot
flashes. I haven't had any for months. Life is good. :-)"

When Suzanne asks Inni how much she takes to get these results,
she responds: "When I first started I took 2 tsp a day, one in the
morning and one late afternoon (not too late though because it
claims to give you extra energy that might keep you awake if you
take maca too late in the day -- btw, I never realized an increase in
energy). After the hotflashes were gone I tried to get by with 1 tsp
a day, usually some time during the morning, and so far it's
working.

"Maca also comes pre-measured in capsules because many people
don't like the taste (it has sort of a yucky taste and reminds me of
something rotten), but I bought the powder and just mix it with
orange juice which sort of covers the taste. I don't recall the exact
website though where I got it from (maybe I need something for
my memory too, not just for hot flashes, haha), but there are many
around. Just make a websearch for 'maca powder' and see what
you find. Good luck!"

A member named Rob notes that most U.S. versions of maca root
are "not NEARLY potent enough", and Inni admits that she
doesn't have "the first idea" about how maca balances hormones.
These comments help underline the fact that any agent natural or
pharmaceutical that affects hormones should be treated with
caution and used with the guidance of a doctor or a natural health
care physician.

Other Forum threads that address alternative ways to manage
symptoms of menopause include:

* Black Cohosh for HRT
* Yam cream
* Dr. Jonathan Wright's bio-identical HRT
* Getting off HRT
* Natural hormone replacement

Trix or Treats
You may have heard the recent news that General Mills will start using
whole grain in cereal products for kids. Well... not exactly. A
newly developed technology has produced a different type of
whole grain. But is it really whole? Is it really healthier? And why
isn't anyone in the mainstream media asking these questions?

RAVEN MAD

It's hard to hold your breath during 30 minutes of football, but
everyone in Baltimore did just that Sunday night. The Ravens
offense could hardly have looked worse for the first two
quarters of the game 3 interceptions (one that really wasn't
the QB's fault), missed routes, dropped balls, overthrown
passes, and bad blocking that kept Jamal Lewis under 20
rushing yards. It was like the Bad News Bears decided to try
football.

Fortunately, the defense did its job this week and held the
Redskins to just 10 points by half-time. So a comeback was
still in reach.

And reach they did. Ed Reed had one of the most amazing
defensive plays we've seen. He forced a fumble during a sack,
recovered it himself, and ran it back for a TD. Not to be
outdone by such a young lad, Neon Deion got his first
interception as a Raven, saving a very likely touchdown. And BJ
Samms proved he may just be the best thing to happen to the
Ravens this year after running back a kick for a touchdown;
the second time hes done that in two weeks.

And it wasn't just the D and the special teams; the offense did
what it needed to do in the second half, too. Jamal Lewis
busted free (which he won't be doing very much of after the
season, if hes smart) and got more than 80 rushing yards
after half-time. And Kyle Boller controlled the ball and the
clock pretty well to ensure the Skins wouldn't have time to
come back.

So tragedy became triumph in the Ravens Sunday night game.
And the city of Baltimore let out a collective sigh of huge relief.

They have a bye week next week and come back on the 24th to
face Buffalo. So look for more RAVEN MAD on October 29.
