Good Housekeeping's Site of the Day

Bugbios
http://www.insects.org/

Bugbios is a 'shameless promotion of insect appreciation.'  Rather than view these critters as creepy crawlies, 'this site aims to help you really see insects for the miniature marvels they represent and to understand how intertwined our cultures have become with these alien creatures.'  Developed by Dexter Sear whose technical expertise and love of entomology is definitely reflected on Bugbios, the site is easy to navigate, attractive and houses an interesting collection of photographs of the various specimen available in thumbnail size and larger for more intense study.  Here's an excellent resource for the classroom, for projects and just about anything bug-related of the insect variety!

Reader's Digest CyberSmiles

On my first day at the gas station, I watched a co-worker measure the level of gasoline in the underground tanks by lowering a giant measuring stick down into them. "What would happen if I threw a lit match into the hole?" I joked. "It would go out," he answered very matter-of-factly. "Really?" I asked, surprised to hear that. "Is there a safety device that would extinguish it before the fumes are ignited?" "No," my co-worker replied. "The force from the explosion would blow the match out."

A Taste of Oklahoma Heaven

INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup nut pieces
2 cups sugar
1 cup cream or evaporated milk
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1 cup cream or evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
TO PREPARE:

Sprinkle the nuts over the bottom of a buttered 8x8-inch pan.  Bring the sugar, 1 cup cream, corn syrup and butter slowly to a boil in a saucepan, stirring occasionally.  Stir in 1 cup cream.
Cook until the mixture begins to thicken, stirring frequently.  Continue cooking until the mixture darkens, stirring constantly.  Continue cooking to 254 degrees on a candy thermometer, hard-ball stage.  Remove from heat.
Stir in the vanilla.  Pour the hot mixture over the nuts.  Let stand until firm.  Cut into small squares.
