1. Companies Scramble to Deal with Spyware

>From MSNBC.com (Topic: Spyware), Nov. 1:
The people who call Dell Inc.'s customer service line often
have no idea why their computers are running so slow. The
ones who call America Online Inc. can't necessarily explain
why Internet connections keep dropping. And those who file
error reports with Microsoft Corp. don't always know why
their computers inexplicably crash.

>From Wired.com (Topic: E-Voting), Nov. 1:
In 1996, a federal testing lab responsible for evaluating
voting systems in the United States examined the software
for a new electronic voting machine made by I-Mark Systems
of Omaha, Nebraska. The tester included a note in the lab's
report praising the system for having the best voting
software he had ever seen, particularly the security and use
of encryption.

6. One Small Step for R&D Spending

>From Business Week (Topic: Spending), Nov. 1:
Despite an iffy economy, multinational corporations slightly
increased their spending on research and development last
year -- a crucial growth factor for the global economy. A
new survey by IEEE Spectrum magazine shows that R&D outlays
at the 100 top companies rose 2.2%, to $236 billion, in
2003, the latest year for which data are available,
BusinessWeek Online has learned. The IEEE Spectrum report
will be released Nov. 1.

7. Is Wireless Messaging the Next Campaign Frontier?

>From eWeek (Topic: Messaging), Oct. 30:
It's been said that polite conversation should avoid the two
mood-killing topics of politics and religion. But what about
text messaging, which has been playing a small, but growing,
role in politics this year? Just as blogging has
revolutionized election-year reporting, text messaging via
cell phones and PDAs has served as a constant reminder to
the mobile community that it's time to vote.
