The carriers have agreed on a set of guidelines for interoperability of MMS, which lets mobile phone users add digital photos, sounds, video and other rich content to messages they send from one data-capable phone to another. The group expects MMS interoperability to be established by year-end. So far, MMS interoperability in the U.S. has only been established between Cingular Wireless and AT&T Wireless, and users of other services have not been able consistently to send rich content to each other's phones, according to 3G Americas, an organization of GSM carriers. <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2004/1026fallctia3.html> Interoperability just got a little bit tighter between Cingular and AT&T Wireless because the two companies completed their $41 billion merger after clearing Justice Department and FCC hurdles. The union creates the nation's biggest wireless carrier in terms of subscribers. The newly combined company, which will be known as Cingular Wireless, has more than 46 million customers, surpassing Verizon Wireless with 40.4 million customers. It will have licenses to operate wireless service in 49 of 50 U.S. states, and will serve the top 100 U.S. metropolitan areas. Cingular had to divest itself of wireless customers and other assets in 13 U.S. markets in order to gain Justice Department approval for the merger. <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2004/1025cingudojr.html> Verizon and Motorola did not merge, but the RBOC selected the vendor to supply video network infrastructure and consumer premises equipment for its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network. Terms of the multiyear agreement were not disclosed. Verizon plans to launch video services on its FTTP networks next year. Verizon's selection of Motorola follows SBC's $1.7 billion, five-year award to Alcatel to integrate SBC's $6 billion fiber-to-the-node buildout, called Project Lightspeed. <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2004/1020sbcal.html> _______________________________________________________________ To contact: Jim Duffy Jim Duffy is managing editor of Network World's service provider equipment coverage <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/>.
