I was running my surface grinder with CNC and started smelling something that smelled like hot paper , looked around NO! not paper electronics , leaned over and it was the stepper motor . I shut off the control and touched the motor , it burnt my finger, a drop of water from the grinder fell on it and sizzled ? I garbed an air hose and cooled it down wondering what had happened , I have never seen a stepper smoke . I remembered that I had replaced the current set resistor on the Gecko a couple hours ago and this was the first run afterwards . I have a resistor "file" that all the resistors are in marked bags so I always just read the bag and grab one , the 50 or so resistors in the 25K bag are in reality 250K that means the Gecko was stuffing 7 amps into a 2.5 amp motor for about 3 or 4 minutes . ALWAYS CHECK STUPID !!! Would you believe the motor still works
