XP certainly relies on leadership, and in the initial stages of applying
XP that leadership often comes from one person. At that stage, if that
one person leaves and no one else chooses to step up to the challenge of
leadership, the changes made in applying XP are likely to evaporate.
This is a choice, however, on the part of everyone on the team. Everyone
has to cooperate in order for the team to give up completely.

One question that comes to mind is why that one person left. Did they
clash with management? If so, then continuing to apply XP is likely to
be difficult. Did they not get along with the team? Did they find a
better opportunity?

Is there any chance for you to talk to the person who left? It seems
that would give you a lot more information about the situation.

I have seen XP applied in many different national cultures. XP is a
natural fit for each in some ways and a challenge in others, and the
cool thing is that the fits and fusses are all different.
