A Victory for the Center
—Hugh Hewitt

Americans from every political persuasion are still coming to grips with the results of last week's election. Many have pointed to the rise of the "values voter;" some on the left allege that it was victory for a radical version of conservatism that puts us all at risk.

But Election Day 2004 was a victory for a significant majority of Americans: Not only those on the right, but also the untold millions who are in the center. A center-right coalition voted for vision of an America that they recognize, an independent nation whose citizens share similar core beliefs about family, faith and freedom in an age when they have all come under attack.

There is nothing radical, for example, about believing marriage is the union of one man and one woman--and overwhelming majorities said as much in the ballot booth.

The radical party in 2004 is clearly the Democratics, the party of Michael Moore, whose leftward drift has made them increasingly irrelevant.

This past election was a victory for the values most of us agree on--and that's a win for America.
