The Broad Coalition on Marriage

After years of ignoring or downplaying the power of evangelical Christians, the mainstream media suddenly insist on exaggerating their importance--suggesting that only "religious fanatics" resist the current push for same-sex marriage.
In fact, it's not just people of faith who oppose radically restructuring the family: overwhelming majorities chose to defend traditional matrimony in all 11 states with the issue on the ballot. The basic argument against government endorsement of gay unions depends on common sense, not just religious faith. Gay activists insist they can't possibly participate in traditional marriages, thereby acknowledging that a man-woman union is significantly, irreducibly different from a same-sex relationship.
Honoring "equal rights" requires that people or relationships that are essentially the same be treated the same--not that dramatically different institutions or sexual impulses be welcomed as if those differences didn't exist. The public understands that today's gay activists, not the defenders of marriage, are the real radicals.
