Here is a list of steps you need to take along with key nutrients that are essential for a healthy heart: * * * * * * * * * * * * ADVERTISEMENT * * * * * * * * * * * * Want to overcome annoying health problems? The American Heart Association recommends that total dietary fat intake not exceed 30 percent of a daily calories, with less than 10 percent coming from saturated fats and trans fats for healthy people (7 percent for those with heart disease). If you eat beef, limit your intake to four times per month with no meat at all three days per week. Eat fish (cold-water fish such as salmon) at least two to three times per week. Use olive oil, which has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. > Exercise. Exercise a minimum of three times per week for 30 to 60 minutes per session. Keep your heart rate up during the peak minutes (after you warm up and before you cool down). > Vitamin E. Vitamin E (800 units per day) may keep bad LDL cholesterol from depositing in your arteries. > Coenzyme Q-10. A minimum of 30 milligrams per day is appropriate (100 milligrams can be taken with certain types of heart problems, like congestive heart failure). Check with your doctor. > Garlic. Take one or two concentrated capsules (the equivalent of one clove) daily. Garlic thins blood and may raise HDL (good cholesterol). > Bran. Include water-soluble bran in your diet daily. I recommend one-third cup of oat bran and an additional form of wheat bran (one-half cup). > Psyllium. Take one to two teaspoons daily if your cholesterol is high. > Adopt a low-salt diet. Reduce your salt intake by not adding salt when preparing food. Instead, use lite salt or herbs for seasoning. > Lose weight. If you are overweight, lose two to three pounds per week no more or no less through a combination of diet and exercise. Always eat breakfast and make your evening meal light. > Baby aspirin. Take one daily (81 milligrams). Check with your doctor first, as some people should not take aspirin. > Control blood pressure. It is imperative to control your blood pressure. If diet and exercise doesnt do so, consult your doctor. You may need a prescription medication to help. > Get regular checkups. Know what youre battling against, whether it is high cholesterol, high blood pressure or another factor. Get a regular stress test, blood work and a good head-to-toe checkup. > Get your cholesterol down. Your total cholesterol level should be below 200, your LDL cholesterol below 130 (preferably below 100), your HDL level above 40 and your ratio of total cholesterol to HDL under four. If a combination of diet, exercise and nutritional supplements doesnt help, ask your doctor about cholesterol-lowering medications. Finally, if you have any symptoms of a heart problem such as chest pain, tightness or pressure see your doctor immediately. Early treatment can prevent a more serious condition from developing, or even a heart attack later. ----- For more information on Dr. Cherry's ministry, visit his Web site: http://link.crosswalk.com/UM/T.asp?A1.43.28573.1.1698058 For Copyright Terms visit http://link.crosswalk.com/UM/T.asp?A1.43.28573.2.1698058 ____________________SUBSCRIPTION INFO_______________________ * This newsletter is never sent unsolicited.
