Offense Remains in Question

The Redskins defense finally had a letdown -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART0475124672949E17F3F1E84050
in a 17-0 loss Sunday to the Cincinnati Bengals. But Washington's defense
dropped only one
notch in its league ranking to no. 2 behind the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Redskins defense figured to be due for a lackluster effort after playing
well for several
games despite missing key players. Unfortunately for Washington, its offense
wasn't able to
have its first big game to make up for the defense's inevitable stinker. Even
in the loss,
the Redskins shut out Cincinnati after allowing 17 points in the first half,
succumbing to
a ball-control approach by second-year quarterback Carson Palmer -

, who didn't play a snap as a rookie.

Washington's defensive efforts make the season especially frustrating because
of what could
have been if the Redskins offense played anywhere near expected.

When Coach Joe Gibbs announced his return, the team's question marks concerned
a defensive
unit that was ranked 25th in the NFL last year. The Redskins underwent their
most active offseason
in franchise history, spending more than $110 million almost equally on defense
and offense.
However, Washington's offense already had one of the league's deepest wideout
corps, led by
Laveranues Coles. The Redskins envisioned an offensive juggernaut after
acquiring Clinton Portis,
one of the league's best tailbacks, and Mark Brunell, who had been the
11th-highest rated quarterback
in NFL history. Even Brunell's detractors couldn't have predicted he would have
the worst statistics
of any starter this season.

Before the season, the Redskins were so confident about their offense behind an
offensive wizard
like Gibbs that the organization was torn between using its No. 5 pick on
safety Sean Taylor
or tight end Kellen Winslow. Without Champ Bailey, who was traded for Portis,
the Redskins
desired extra help for the defense. Could Winslow, who missed most of this
season with an injury,
have bolstered Washington's offense? Or did the unit have so many issues that a
rookie, albeit
supremely talented, wouldn't have made much of a difference?

The questions remain on the team, but now they envelop the offense instead of
the surprisingly
sturdy defense.
