Today, eWEEK.com Executive Editor Matthew Rothenberg sits in
for Jim Louderback, who will return to newsletter duty
Thursday.

IT's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Chanukwanzmas

Who needs Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday shopping
season? Our family has yet to untangle Halloween's faux
spider webs from the front hedges, but the season is
apparently upon us, judging from the music in the malls and
the trimmings on our sites. The elves at PCMag.com kick off
their annual holiday guide with a virtual cornucopia of
daily gift ideas covering everything from little hard drives
to leviathan LCD screens.

Meanwhile, eWEEK.com's Retail Center gets into the act with
a special report that looks at year-end gift shopping
rituals and their effect on big companies' information
technology. Merry commerce to all!

Has the Enterprise Got Game?

Corporate IT's got its fingers in other consumer pies, too:
Consider the apparently casual-dress topics of gaming and IM
chit-chat, both of which garnered a gander from eWEEK.com.
It seems that video games are more than just a distraction
from work; they also serve as a proving ground for
technologies bound for corporate sites and provide glitzy
fodder for business simulations.
http://ct.eletters.whatsnewnow.com/rd/cts?d=181-355-1-278-1004620-14987-0-0-0-1

And while we've covered enterprise IM like a gray flannel
suit in our special report of the same name, a recent survey
from the META Group finds that more than half of business
users employ IM for personal reasons. More evidence why
analyst firms get the big bucks!

'Metroid Prime 2 Echoes': Tuned to Fans, Not Newbies

Last week, Xbox fans got their game on with the arrival of
"Halo 2"; this week, it's GameCube jockeys' turn, thanks to
the release of a new version of "Metroid Prime." PCMag.com's
Matthew D. Sarrel takes "Metroid Prime 2 Echoes" for a spin
and finds plenty to satisfy followers of the original
adventure. But will newcomers get the same charge?

Chipping Away at 4GHz

The hardware junkies at ExtremeTech.com are anxiously
waiting for a new clock-speed barrier to fall, when desktop
CPUs finally reach the 4GHz range. Alas, they'll need to
twiddle their thumbs a bit longer: The current Pentium 4
crop from Intel has apparently maxed out at a lowly 3.8GHz.
But if you're not addicted to round numbers, does this
latest speed boost represent a performance increase large
enough to justify its hefty price? Check out this
comprehensive review and make your choice!

Bank of America: Imperfect Union?

My Fleet bank branch recently got a new set of Bank of
America logos, but apparently the changes will go beyond a
new color scheme and a shiny new ATM card in my wallet.
Baselinemag.com explains that in the wake of BofA's $47
billion buyout of FleetBoston, the banking behemoth is
spending beaucoup bucks unifying its 1,500 new branches on
its Model Bank computer systems. So far, however, the work
has barely begun. Read on, and advise me on whether I should
store my money in my mattress until this conversion is over.

New Tricks for Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat turned 7.0 on Monday, and the new version of
the software packs a variety of new features aimed at
simpler handling of Portable Document Format files,
including a beefier reader, new copy-protection capabilities
and tighter integration with Microsoft apps. eWEEK.com takes
a look at what this upgrade means for end-users and systems
administrators. And for an even wider-angle view on this
major upgrade, check out a new member of the Ziff Davis
Internet clan: PDFZone, which ladles out a zesty gazpacho of
Acrobat 7.0-related news, tips and commentary.

Pushing Tyco off the Scandal Sheets, into the Black

Remember Tyco? Remember all of the headlines about
corruption at the multinational juggernaut? CEO Dennis
Kozlowski's $2.1 million birthday blowout on the island of
Sardinia, not to mention his $6,000 shower curtain, all paid
from the corporate till? Unlike Enron, Tyco's still
standing, and this time, it's trying to transform itself
into a real worldwide operation. CIOInsight.com has the 411
on Tyco CIO Dana Deasy and his battle to untangle the snarl
of technology linking Tyco holdings around the globe.
