Today's focus: Sprint and Sanyo unveil on-demand multimedia
phone

By Keith Shaw

Are you ready for wireless on-demand multimedia? Sprint hopes
so. Along with Sanyo, the carrier last week launched a
multimedia phone, the MM-7400 (its full name is the Sprint PCS
Vision Multimedia Phone MM-7400 by Sanyo).

Features on the device include the ability to view on-demand
streaming video and audio; shoot VGA-style digital photos and
30-second video clips with the phone's integrated camera and
camcorder; and communicate via a walkie-talkie with other users
through Sprint's PCS Ready Link service. The phone will be
available later this month for $379.99, or $229.99 after rebates
(along with a service plan).

The camera includes three different flash modes and the
camcorder includes a "movie light" to help improve recording in
low-light situations. The camera can upload photos to Sprint's
Picture Mail and Video Mail service to let users share the
content with family and friends.

The phone will support the Sprint PCS Vision Multimedia
Services, in which users are able to receive streaming audio and
video content from sources including NBC Mobile, CNN, ABC News,
Fox Sports, The Weather Channel, Discovery, E! Entertainment,
mFlix, Twentieth Century Fox, AccuWeather, Cartoon Network
(Adult Swim), Comedy Time and 1KTV. Sprint says it can deliver
the content over its wireless network at up to 15 frames per
second.

While this is clearly a consumer play, the confidence that
Sprint has in its wireless network to provide on-demand
streaming (although 15 frames per second still isn't
high-quality video - let's talk when Sprint gets it up to 30
frames per second) is impressive. I actually hope that this
succeeds for Sprint, as it would open up the possibilities for
business users to use their wireless phones for one-way video
broadcasts (Webcasts, etc.), or even two-way video conferencing.

It's easy to see why Sprint went for the flashier application
than to try and create something that business users would
benefit from. Sprint can charge money to the content providers
to host the content, and then charge customers accessing the
service (through the use of minutes, content downloaded, etc.).

But again, I hope this succeeds, as it will give people ideas on
how to use on-demand video streaming for something other than
just watching the latest movie trailers.
