 IMO men regard their boats as phallic symbols and hold onto their 
tillers/knobs at all times, even when not necessary.
I work locks when Roger is ill. If we come to a flight we take turns. It makes 
no sense for the weaker crew member to do the harder job. Also for the speed 
merchants it is quicker for the man to work the lock. They often have longer 
legs and can step over bottom gates at narrow locks.
Did women work all the locks traditionally?
