Thanks very much to all who replied. I've bought the HP Photosmart
C6180 (as recommended by Andy). I was persuaded to the HP by a
combination of size (and they all have a large desk footprint) and the
fact that all the protruding/moveable bits are at the front and on
top. This suits the space available on my new built-in office desk
better than alternatives that I checked. After a lock-up during the
first installation attempt I found that my anti-virus should have been
switched off. When this was done the (lengthy) installation went
without a hitch for Win XP Pro. All I've got to do now is to learn how
to use all the facilities on it ;-)
