Maria's streamlined shape indeed makes her move very well through the 
water.

Yes, a longer line would reduce the sideways pull.

But, that wouldn't happen - the looby falls backwards when the rope 
pulls the other way (such as when the boat has overtaken the horse) and 
the rope just comes off.
