There are three railway tunnels alongside the canal tunnel, the first
railway tunnel was dug by means of adits into the canal tunnel so the spoil
could be taken away in boats. Now that railway tunnel is disused and boats
are shadowed through the canal tunnel by some BW guys in a transit in the
disused railway tunnel. The adits are now the emergency escape route from
the canal tunnel but are all alarmed in case of 'trespassers' leaving boats
- this is one of the reasons that your are BW supervised through Standedge -
in case of idiots going exploring railway tunnels. Hence the number of BW
staff - 1 passenger pod skipper, 1 tunnel guide, 1 tug pilot, 1 guy on each
boat for fending off and the staff in the transit.

>What were those passages with steps and rails that led down to the tunnel
seomewhere in the middle? I was expecting .... just a tunnel passage.
