I feel that way about Sue Grafton (Kinsey Milhone) and Robert Parker
(Spenser, or at a pinch Sunny)

Struggling back OT, I've thought for a while there is definitely a
vacant niche for some more good waterway-set fiction ...

Has anyone other than me read "The Moon Moth", by Jack Vance?  It is
set on a planet on which *all* people live in houseboats.  It is not
only one of the all-time great science fiction stories, but a really
good detective story. (ps  They all play music too.  Aaaaaah!).
