In New York the Erie Canal puropose for much of the 20th century was
to shuttle oil and grain from great lakes freighters in buffalo to
hudson river ports and new york. This was before railroads had
mondern unit trains. The destinaion for the grain was export to
england and ny bakerys..oil was air forces
