I'm pleased to see that George uses the pub analogy in relation to the 
conversation on this list because it is exactly what I encourage on the 
football lists that I run.

Sometimes in the pub you talk to everybody; sometimes, you listen to 
everybody:  but there are times when the assembled throng splits into 
smaller groups and talks about things that won't interest everybody  -  they 
don't leave the pub to do that!

My football lists go off-topic more during the summer.  Guess why?  Yes, 
because there's little or no football going on.  Now, I wonder why a boating 
group would tend to go off-topic more during the winter!
