One of the less civilised things about this country compared with the 
USA, or at least California, is that most places that offer wifi access 
charge for it. There are a few places which offer free access, but the 
big chains (*bucks, McCraps, most hotels etc) charge a lot.

Wandering around with a wifi-equipped PDA will usually locate some 
unencrypted domestic access points.
