Bob It depends. As the owner....and I've looked at your Company Records and checked that you are ... I would first like evidence that you have maintained it properly because I wouldn't want it to collapse unexpectedly. After all, it is a 200 year old bridge, on a busy canal and I personally have bumped into it a couple of times in my narrowboat. You are the owner but you explain that you have contracted a reliable company to look after it for you. I would then want to ask that contractor whether you have provided them with enough money to properly maintain the bridge. I write to the contractor and I get a possibly ambivalent reply that tells me that the bridge has been maintained in the a way consistent with good engineering practice. So now I need to check on the reliability of the contractor and on further checking I get the idea that the contractor may be reluctant to give me the whole story because you are a major shareholder and a member of his board and the source of a number of other projects and he wouldn't want to upset you. I also hear rumours that you have a reputation for running an extremely tight ship and have recently made swingeing cuts in the budget that you previously approved for the upkeep of the bridge. You are also on record as saying that you feel the people that go under the bridge should pay for its maintenance but your friends and customers that walk over it should do so free. I also discover that you have recently inherited your business and have no previous experience of looking after any business let alone one that owns 200 year old bridges. You are very ambitious, have said to a number of people that you don't give a stuff about bridges and would like to move on to other things. You also have a reputation for not answering direct questions and spinning any deal you are involved in. OK. So who do I believe, you & the contractor or the rumours? Now, a question for you. How can I make sure that what I've heard in the bridge market is true? -- Will Chapman Save Our Waterways www.SaveOurWaterways.org.uk
