Belatedly joining in on Martin's remark about Manchester race course 
that…

"The former Manchester racecourse is now part of Salford Quays."

then Martin said he meant the original Manchester race course!....

But Castle Irwell was the original.  I think Martin meant the New 
Barns course by the MSC (and now the site of the Lowry Theatre); New 
Barns was used when the Castle Irwell course fell into the hands of 
someone opposed to gambling. All according to:

Students' Union at Castle Irwell was the old grandstand!)
