It could be worse - on the Wigan flight some years ago we (then hirers of
many years) were sharing with a posh-looking private boat. Suddenly a horrid
noise commenced from inside the other boat. It seems that one of the crew
always practised on the bagpipes for one hour from 8 to 9 each night!
The crew of the bagpipe boat seemed totally indifferent to the racket but
for us the noise was bad enough to make us keep swapping steerers to get away
from the noise. We suggested to them that this was not really the place or time
but were met with a wall of resentment for encroaching on their space and the
noise went on.
As darkness was coming and a BW man was waiting to chain the locks we had to
go on sharing though the deep upper locks where, down in the depths, the noise
was magnified. (The lady was only learning and most of the noises were out of
tune screeches.) From their grins it was obvious that most of their crew
thought it a real joke but I bent a GU windlass shaft into an L trying to wind
the cloughs quicker. (And then bent it back though it still has a kink in it to
this day!)
As the top lock filled some clock struck nine and the noise ceased. The
other lot pushed one gate open, jumped aboard their boat (nameless) and drove
off leaving us, deaf and dazed, to close the gates and paddles. I always think
of them as being in the same boater group of anti-socials as the crew of an
(unknown name) boat who threw buckets of water over people on various passing
boats in Braunston tunnel.
