Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal! (I&M canal) Posted by: "trainfinder22" [EMAIL PROTECTED] trainfinder22 Mon Feb 26, 2007 6:34 pm (PST)
http://dnr.state.http://dnr.shttp://dnr.stah&m/east/m/east/ The Chicago and Saitary Ship Canal was built to REVERSE a rivers flow so that sewage would flow into the Illniose river instead of lake michigan ************** The canal was completed in 1900 to preserve the water supply for the city of Chicago. Drinking water for the city was (and still is) drawn from Lake Michigan which was being polluted by raw sewage. What a great idea! Reverse the flow of the river and send the sewage downstream to the Illinois, and ultimately Mississippi rivers. I wonder what the good people downstream thought. I once cruised the Illinois River to the Mississippi River and then all the way to New Orleans. All in a 26 foot cruiser. Talk about feeling like a small fish in a big sea! So that's what all that flotsam was... John Glaves nb Rhapsody ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
