We have two heating systems both rarely used twixt May and October. One of
the systems employs diesel (mikuni) heating and while it has a reasonable
silencer and gets serviced (which most don't I was told) it does pump out fumes
which smell to my way of thinking. The same is true of many of the diesel
stove/boiler heated boats we have come across.

With this and other things in mind we tend to moor a bit away from other
boats. Unfortunately other boats, arriving late, don't do the same for us. Some
arrive, moor a few feet in front of Tiny on an empty canal and then they crew
dives inside, closed the door and on goes the heating unit. This, if
diesel/radiator, is often in the engine compartment at the back of their boat -
meaning they get the heat ans meanwhile the fumes (and noise) get pumped into
our front living room cabin.

The same happens for boats with smokey fires who always seem to decide to
moor upwind of us though mostly further away (but still near enough to smoke us
out).

The strange thing about many of these people is that even on hot nights
when we are on deck they are indoors with the heating blasting away. Maybe
their boats just ain't insulated or like a lady we knew the occupants all want
to strip semi-naked once they are indoors. I can never figure it out - maybe
its part of their idea of the complete canal experience but whatever it is they
seem to literally, have money to burn.

I agree - we have loads of wood/coal burning stoves on the boats at
Northolt. If the wind is blowing the wrong way you have to walk
through loads of smelly smoke. My diesel bubble stove is clean burning
(more of the time), and stays in all night.

Only problem is the need to spend money on oil to burn, other than
that - far better than wood/coal stoves.

However, even after spending large amounts of cash my SR3 still spews
out loads of smoke when cold, or running hard!

Cheers,

Mike
