Much more fun was the second part of the ITV thriller on later. The

I heard the clanking of the chains as the windlass appeared to be opening
the gates !

So guessing its Manchester. Ashton Canal Clayden Locks ? chain linked
windlass maybe the last lock on the City Centre Rochdale for the sound
effects.

Or is there a bridge over one raised by a chain. The lock is right next door
to a pub at the cul de sac end of a road.

"Fortunately it was a staggeringly slow filling lock, particularly as it
appeared that the murderer filled it by opening the gates"

There is a good purpose for leaky gates after all. The suspense was riveting
!!
