You think you have problems...I pay for 8MB but, living at the end of a lane
in the middle of a bog, even though the blurb implies we are telephone modern
8MB etc in fact the telephone line is only rated at 2MB. Add to that the fact
that telecoms, who refuse to put the latest booster bits on our lines as it is
not cost effective, have taken a nearby pole down years ago and, as a temporary
measure, the line is laid along a (regularly brushed!) hedge before heading
down to be buried in the mud under a farm gate used by very large tractors
pulling loaded wagons, after which it snakes up a pole which said
tractors/wagons wack into regularly and you begin to realise why we find
ourselves still 'on the phone' but cut off from the web for hours on end
seemingly at random day and night. I say at random but we do notice that it
goes off more when our one neighbour with the Internet is home.

Another facet to the problem is that out here if anyone complains and the
telephone, electric, water company actually deign to do something we understand
(from the men) that they are told to do a quick fix which more often than not
screws up the service for a lot of others in the area. If one of them then
complains the system is adjusted for them - which can screw up the original
again. It all makes work...

This may not be down to NTL unless you have cable. I have always used BT and
even they, who own the local loop, cant get me more than 5 of my 8 and I am
less than 10 minutes walk to the exchange. I could fetch it in buckets
quicker !
