One other advantage that Phil didn't mention are that you are given a
large capacity for storing emails (currently about 2.8GB) so you never
have to delete anything. This means you need never go nomail on lists
because there is no fear of your inbox filling up. On return you can
read whatever you wish at your own leisure and never miss anything.

Like Phil I have been using gmail (now googlemail in the UK) for two
years and have over 12,500 messages stored in about 482MB (i.e. 17% of
available space).

As well as having other accounts forward to your gmail account, you
can set up forwarding of gmail to another account or even POP3 your
gmail messages.
