Our local line used to have a proper large luggage area. Then the sprinters
arrived and they cordoned off a half carriage for parcels. (It was often near
full.) Now the new trains have room for cases around/between/under seats but

People have mentioned various railway stations which are near canals. I am
wondering whether you would actually be allowed to take a kayak on a train.
Most trains do not have a separate luggage carrying area - even bicycles
are banned from many services.

I think I would be checking with the intended train company(ies) before
turning up at the station. Their reply might well be that such could be
carried at the conductor's/train manager's discretion - I would not be
encouraged by that.
