My comment:- I think this is an aspect of (particularly the rural) British character, where you can still be regarded as an incomer after twenty years. Certainly the Idle Women books comment on how difficult the boaters could be - but also how the boaters were often helpful and always willing to learn a new and better technique, even if it was one of the IWs who knew it. 60+ years on, there's still an element of that.
