For today´s walk we will be visiting the western end of this the longest trans-
Pennine waterway. The Liverpool to Wigan section of the Leeds & Liverpool
Canal officially opened in 1774, but the canal all the way through to Leeds
was
 not fully open until 1816.

We will meet at the car park opposite to Seaforth and Litherland Station,
which
is situated in Seaforth. Follow the M62 to Junction 6 and here turn right onto
the M57. Continue along the M57 to its westerly end at Junction 7. On leaving
the motorway turn left onto the A5036, following signs for Bootle and the
Docks. Initially the A5036 is named Dunnings Bridge Road and further on, as
it
approaches Seaforth, it becomes Church Road. Continue along A5036
passing entrance to Aintree Racecourse (l.h.s.) still following signs for the
Docks. As the large cranes at the Seaforth Container Terminal come into view
continue towards them. Eventually you reach a flyover that takes the A5036
road over the canal. At the next traffic island take the 2nd Exit into
Seaforth
Road and immediately Seaforth Station can be seen on the left hand side. We
will meet in the station car park, which is immediately beyond the railway
bridge
and situated on the right hand side. If this car park is full there are two
alternative car parks within 50 yards, one on the l.h.s. at rear of a tall
brick
building and one on the r.h.s. in front of the small shopping precinct.
Parking is
free on all three car parks.

Commencing the walk from the station car park we will join the canal towpath
at the site of the former Litherland Road Lift Bridge (No. 2B) and make the
short walk (1 mile) to Bootle where there will be a break for lunch. Two pubs,
The Wild Rose (Witherspoons) and Yates Wine Lodge are located on Strand
Road, near the canal and also a number of cafes are available in the adjacent
Strand Shopping Centre. There are no pubs or cafes serving food between
here and the Albert Dock - hence the early lunch. There are plenty of eating
and drinking opportunities at the Albert Dock.

In the afternoon we will follow the canal to its present terminus in the
Vauxhall
Area and then trace its former route, now infilled, towards its original
terminus.
From here we will walk to the Liverpool Waterfront and view the on-going
construction work to create the new Liverpool Link, scheduled for completion
in
2008. The walk will end at the Albert Dock. We will return from Liverpool (St.
James) to `Seaforth and Litherland´ station by the Merseyrail service that
runs
to Southport. There are possibilities for an early escape by train back to
Seaforth and Litherland. The towpath is metalled and walking shoes or
trainers
 will be adequate.

 Directions to Seaforth Station

Follow M62 to Junction 6 - exit M62 here and turn right to join M57.
Continue along M57 to where it ends at Junction 7 and then join A5036
following signs for Bootle and the Docks.
You will pass entrance to Aintree Racecourse on l.h.s.
Inititially A5036 is Dinnings Bridge Road and approaching Seaforth
 it becomes Church Road.
Large cranes at Seaforth Docks come into view and continue towards them.
Approaching Seaforth a flyover takes A5036 over L&L Canal and is
immediately
followed by a large trafffic island.
Take 2nd exit off island into Seaforth Road. Seaforth Station is immediate on
 l.h.s.
Pass under railway bridge and the carpark where we meet is immediate on
