The purpose of my original posting seems to have been lost in a series
of explanations as to why things are as they are and not how to address
some of the issues that I felt made this years cavalcade less enjoyable
than previous years. So here are some ideas:
Bar-B-Q I appreciate all the original group no longer wanted to run it.
Some of the griping I have heard, over the years, from boaters to the
hard working team made it inevitable they would get fed up and quit. So
how about doing what the Wendover arm did(does) and sell packs of food,
in advance, which boaters cook themselves on Bar-B-Q's set up on the
site. You may need some disclaimer notices such as HOT on the Bar-B-Q
but should be able to get round the H&S issues.
The issue of entertainment is difficult I know, firstly I have to
disagree with Mike Stevens, the only entertainment besides Chucklefoot
was jazz on Saturday. Yes there were bands playing on the island on
other days but you can't sit and listen to them, they just give a
pleasant background "musac" to the event. So if the event can't afford
more entertainment then at least have the groups play one set in the
Entertainment marquee each day.
Finally I agree that the theme for the Saturday Pageant seems to be
getting harder over the years, which could explain why there has been a
decline in entrants. This years theme is a case in point "Canals
Combating Congestion" gave little scope except running a laden working boat.
