If you are going up the Rochdale nine you are more than likley to find the lock
full or partially so due to the volume of water coming down.Bywashes certainly
existed at some of the locks but were probaly not large enough to cope with the
present day volume of water.BW ran a lot of the Ashton water off before it
reached the Rochdale before restoration of the ring. Now the Rochdale nine has
to cope with all the water from Marple locks and the Hudderfield narrow as well
as as its own, hence the problem. We were not trying to break records when we
did the trip down in 1976 but were assisted by the PFCS working party members.
I am pretty sure that Pete Stockdale was probably in charge, in any event they
were all rewarded with a pint in a local Deansgate pub.The other boat cruising
with us was a cruiser owned by the late Bill Heap. Happy memories. Chris.KP

In company with another boat we cleared the Rochdale nine in 57 minutes, how
you may ask, well it was in a time of servere drought and the water levels were
very low. Normally it is not possible to waste water on the Rochdale nine there
is just too much of it.If you have a lockwheeler get them to flush away some of
the excess leave a bottom paddle half up while you are filling or half a top
paddle whist emptying. Keep your eye on the water levels at all time and make
sure all paddles are closed as you leave.Let the water take some of the hard
work out of navigating this flight. Chris.KP
