Whereas the bywash system has disadvantages. For example, the draw from water entering the bywash can pull a boat off course, and the flow when this water exits can do the same by pushing if the exit is badly At one lock on the 9 we opened the bottom paddles on one lock but didn't notice a boat leaving the lock below it. That boat was swept across/onto the top of the by-weir where it was jammed by the pressure of water. With a combination of opening and closing the right paddles and using ropes we finally managed to get it off the weir. It wasn't dangerous but the quiet way the other boater didn't say how he felt about it made the whole episode very embarrassing. ;-) So before opening the paddles check the next lock to see if you are likely to cause (or get) problems by operating the lock!
